How to Safely Dispose a Car Battery

European Car Battery Service 317-253-3331

European Car Battery Service 317-253-3331

Car batteries are not designed to last forever. So at some point, you will need to have yours replaced. When that time comes, it is important to have a plan set up for safe battery disposal. Automotive batteries contain several hazardous chemicals and materials, so they cannot simply be thrown away like the rest of your garbage. Instead, you will have to use alternative disposal methods. If your vehicle is in need of battery replacement soon, be sure you know what to do with your old one! Continue reading to learn how to safely dispose old car batteries.

Recycle Car Batteries

Automotive batteries contain several metal constituents that can be recycled and repurposed. In fact, most parts of an old car battery can be reprocessed and reused in new car batteries. This is enormously beneficial to our environment and the preservation of our planet’s natural resources. So one safe and efficient course for car battery disposal would be to recycle them at a local scrap metal recycling center or junkyard. Many metal recycling companies pay cash for scrap metal, so you may be able to help the environment and make a quick buck at the same time! If you cannot locate a metal recycling center, look to automotive repair shops. Many mechanics accept old car batteries too.

Handling Old Car Batteries

Because car batteries contain hazardous materials and chemicals, it is critical that you handle them properly if you are replacing yours on your own. This include wearing the proper safety gear, such as goggle and work gloves, to protect your eyes and skin from burns and contamination. When you are taking your old battery to a scrap metal center, be sure to place it in a container that will ensure it remains in an upright position while in route.

European Automotive Maintenance 317-253-3331

So why do you need to bleed car brakes on a routine basis like this? The answer is air. Overtime, small amounts of air begin to enter the brake lines. This changes the way your brakes perform. And if too much air gets inside the brake lines, it can lead to complete brake failure at any given time. You can tell your brake lines may have air in them if they feel spongy or squishy when you apply pressure to them.

The most common reasons why air gets inside brake lines are leaks or worn brake pads. In other cases, air can also enter brake lines during a certain types of car service, or even result from repeated slamming of the brakes. Regardless of how your brake lines acquired air, it is important to have them bled to remove the damaging air and bring your braking system back to a safe and efficient condition.

Why Did My Car Battery Die?

It’s happens to most drivers, the situation of the unexpected that car battery. And why does it always seem to happen when you’re already late for something, or on your way to work? A dead car batteries never convenient nor does it ever occur at a convenient time. Fortunately, a dead car battery can be easily resolved with either service or replacement; so there is never a need to worry if the situation never arises.

There are multiple reasons why your car battery may be dead. From parasitic draw and sulfation, to car accessories, water loss, and corrosion, that car batteries are a result of many influences. Continue reading to learn more about why your car battery may have died and what to do to get your car back on the road again.

Dead Car Batteries

Drainage

One of the most common reasons why a car battery dies is due to drainage. Have you ever left your lights on overnight only to find your car will start the morning? This is a common occurrence in one of the most frequent reasons why people have dead car batteries. The simplest solution for this issue is a jump-start. This involves using a set of tools called jumper cables and requires a second vehicle or battery charging.

Water Loss

Another common reason for dead car batteries is water loss. Of course, modern-day automotive batteries are sealed and maintenance-free, so there’s no need to refill water as you go; however, many of these same batteries also retain a water level indicator that lets you know if the water level is sufficient or not. Water plays a critical role in the electrochemical equation of car battery, so when the water level is insufficient it can affect how the car battery functions. When the water level is too low or completely empty, the electrolytes are imbalanced thus causing the battery cells to become too acidic. This leads to sulfation on the battery plates, which is our next topic. As for water loss, most car batteries have’s that can be unscrewed so you can fill the cells up with distilled water. However, it’s strongly recommended to take your vehicle into a licensed mechanic for safe and professional service.

Sulfation

Sulfation is another reason my car batteries die. Sulfation occurs when batteries are left sitting for long periods of time without being charged. And the longer they sit, the worse the sulfation gets. Lead sulfate crystals form on the battery plates, causing the current within the electrolyte to diminish. Often times, a battery that has too much sulfation is not repairable. But in minor to moderate cases, slow trickle charging or pulse charging the battery are usually effective solutions.

Corrosion

Corroded battery terminals are another common reason why your car battery might be dead. Corrosion and battery terminals interrupts the flow of electrons between the anode and cathode. By regularly inspect in both negative and positive battery terminals, you can catch this problem early on and resolve it with professional car battery repair. Corrosion can also occur due to electrolysis taking place from the different metals on the terminals and cables, or if there’s an imperfect seal between terminal posts and plastic casing. That would allow sulfur acid to leak into the terminals.

How to Naturally Wash Your Car Using Rain

Did you know that a clean vehicle is a happy vehicle? Okay, so our cars don’t actually have feelings, but it can be argued that a clean car has better drivability and aerodynamics. Also, neglecting to wash your car regularly will subject it to years of piled-up residue, which can cause paint erosion, rust, and more. This type of damage has a devastating effect on a vehicle’s overall value.

On the flip side, washing your car too often can be viewed as a monumental waste of water. So how do you find the happy medium? By using nature to wash and rinse your car instead! Continue reading to learn how to wash your car naturally using nothing but environmentally-friendly cleanser and rain water.

Rainwater

Rainwater contains a load of healthy elements. In fact, it has always been rumored that rainwater does wonders for your hair! So it should do the same for a car; right? But can rainwater really wash a vehicle? Well yes! The force and consistency of a rainstorm produces enough precipitation and pressure to remove caked-up pollen, tree sap, dead bugs, dirt, and other common exterior residues. So once you have removed the heavy grime from the exterior of your vehicle, a good rainstorm every so often is all you need! But to remove heavier grime, you will need to take a few steps before the rain comes.

Washing Your Car

Choose a non-toxic, eco-friendly mild dish soap to use for car washing purposes. This type of cleanser is safe for the environment, as well as, yourself and your vehicle. You can find an organic, non-toxic dish cleaner at any local grocery or home improvement store for a fair price. Consider Method® dish soap – 18 oz. – $3. Here’s how to get started:

Don a bathing suit or some other type of outfit you don’t mind getting wet and possible soapy. Apply several drops of your liquid soap to a large, wet sponge. Then simply scrub away, all over your vehicle, including your tires and wheels. Then just sit back and wait for the rain to rinse it all clean!

A Common Myth About Servicing Cars Under Warranty

Many drivers innocently assume that a new vehicle under warranty can only be serviced by its dealership, and that taking their new vehicle to an independent auto shop will cause their factory warranty to be void. But this is a common misconception and simply untrue. In fact, there are laws in place that protect vehicle owners from this type of penalty. Continue reading to learn the truth about servicing vehicles under warranty, and be better informed of your options for routine maintenance and repair.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

There is a federal statute called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a law that governs warranties on consumer products. This law came into effect in 1975 after a widespread misuse of warranties and disclaimers by merchants, and is still enforced to this day by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The statute gets its name from the two Democrats it was sponsored by, Senator Warren G. Magnuson of Washington and U.S. Representative John E. Moss of California, as well as co-sponsor Sen. Frank Moss of Utah.

In the case of new cars, this statute prohibits manufacturers from voiding a vehicle warranty and car dealers from denying warranty coverage, if the vehicle was service or repaired by a non-dealer. So if a consumer has an independent automotive repair shop service their vehicle while under warranty, their warranty cannot be voided as long as the mechanics adhered to the vehicle’s factory recommendations and requirements. This also applies to vehicle owners who opt for a recycled or aftermarket car part.

Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

Car repairs can include anything from collision damages to part replacements and more. As for factory scheduled maintenance, these services generally include inspections, oil changes, fluid checks and refills, tire rotation and balances, brake inspection and service, alignments, flushes, tune-ups, and much more. If you have questions about your vehicle’s warranty, contact your dealer to discuss the conditions of your warranty, including its limitations and privileges. You may also contact your local automotive repair specialist for information about factory scheduled maintenance and repair for vehicles under warranty. You may also refer to your owners’ manual to review the factory recommendations and requirements for your vehicle make and model.

The Importance of Headlight and Taillight Maintenance

Now that summer is coming to a close, we are seeing fewer hours of sunlight with each passing day. And with fall right around the corner, you can expect darker mornings and evenings, earlier and earlier in the day, as the calendar approaches winter. If you are a regular driver, right now is the perfect time of year to ensure your vehicle’s headlights and taillights are ready to take on the darker commutes ahead.

Without properly maintained lighting, you are putting yourself and other drivers at risk. Continue reading to learn why automotive headlight and taillight maintenance is beneficial, and how to get started today.

Automotive Safety

In order to see and be seen on the road, it is vital to have properly-functioning lights. This includes headlights, taillights, and even interior lights. If your front and rear lights are not well-maintained, it can prevent you from being able to safely navigate in dusk and nighttime hours. It also inhibits the ability of other drivers to see you on the road. For this reason, proper vehicle lighting is a key factor in automotive safety, not just for yourself, but for others as well.

Exterior vehicle lights are components that sustain daily wear and tear, which is why they require regular maintenance and periodic replacement. Bulbs that are blinking, dim, or burnt out should be replaced immediately. Check your lights on occasion for any of these signs, and make necessary replacements when needed.

Additional Headlight and Taillight Tips:

🚘 Be sure your front and rear lights are clean and clear. Use a damp cloth or napkin to wipe away any obstructing material, such as dirt, dust, animal droppings, insects, and mud.

🚘 Check the aim of your exterior lights to ensure they are pointed in the right direction. If lights are not aimed properly, they can blind other drivers and hinder your frontal vision on the road.

🚘 Use your lights during dusk, twilight, and evening hours, even if you can see just fine. It helps other drivers see you too.

🚘 Do not drive too far ahead of your front lights when pulling up behind another vehicle. This creates a blind crash spot in front of your car. Park or idle within your headlight range.

🚘 Some states require drivers to turn their headlights on when their windshield wipers are in use. Check with your BMV to see if your state is one of them.

How to Prepare Your Car for a Road Trip

Planning a road trip take a lot of effort. It requires a fair amount of thought, research, and preparation. You must make all the necessary arrangements, map a driving course, pack, and more. But many drivers tend to forget another important safety aspect of road tripping, which is car care. Simply topping of the gas tank and re-filling windshield wiper fluid won’t suffice. And buying air fresheners won’t either. Not only must you prep yourself and your belongings for a road trip, you must also mechanically prepare your vehicle. Continue reading to learn how to prepare your car or truck for an extended drive.

Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

Before planning a road trip with your personal vehicle, it is important to first determine just how “ready” your car is for long distance driving. A simple pre-road trip inspection should do the trick. You can choose to do it yourself, or hire a licensed mechanic to do it for you. By finding small problems and having them repaired before your trip, you can greatly reduce the chances of experiencing costly mechanical problems on the road. This avoids a long list of safety hazards, inconveniences, and unexpected expenses.

What to Inspect:

Check all vehicle filters and fluids. Fluids include motor oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield wiper fluid, and battery fluid. Replenish necessary fluids and replace old or dirty filters wit new ones. You may need a licensed mechanic for help with this part of the inspection.

Check all hoses and belts for signs of damage or deterioration. Look for brittle, cracked, kinked, frayed, or loose belts and hoses. These are critical to your vehicle’s electrical system and should be repaired before a long road trip.

Check the brake system. Be sure the battery connection is clean, well-fit, and free of corrosion. Check brake pads and replace worn or old ones.

Check the vehicle’s alignment, tires, and tire pressure. Get a tire rotation and balance, as well as an alignment if these areas are of in any way.

Check all exterior vehicle lights, including brake lights, hazards, parking lights, and more. Replace bulbs and fuses as necessary.

Check your gas cap. Be sure it is damage-free and secure.
